“I deserve to be in prison,” says Hale*, 46, a convicted murderer in a prison in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
Hale was notorious, a violent criminal who admits to stealing, raping and killing a number of people.
“The worst thing is that I did these things for no reason at all,” he says. “My family hated me, so I lived in the forest like a wild animal for months. People saw me as the devil incarnate. In reality, I was just a shell of a human, filled with anger and hatred.”
